MAYHEM AND CHAOS WOWS THE CROWD DURING THE ANNUAL NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION AT LACROSSE

With the calendar turning to September, great change in the air everywhere you look. Cooler weather will be taking over as we approach the autumn season. The unofficial end to summer and vacation season has passed with the Labor Day holiday. That also means it is time for the young people to return to school for another year of broadening their minds and exploring new horizons. Another sure sign when September is here is when race fans and drivers have a good time enjoying a little good clean hard hitting fun at the LaCrosse Speedway. It was time for full contact action at the 34th edition of the Night of Destruction presented by Western Technical College. A plethora of big air, bouncing, smashing and destroying was on tap for the race fans to go “OOOHHH” and “AAAHHH” over. In addition to that, there was some traditional racing competition on the ‘action track’ quarter-mile that had championship implications on the line.

Dakota Clauson quickly caught and passed Melissa Rusch for the lead on lap three of the final Six Shooter feature of 2025. Matt Moore would eat up the distance on Clauson as he fought him for the lead and things got very intense thanks to lap traffic in the final six laps. The lapped traffic helped Moore take the top spot with four laps left. but the lapped traffic allowed Rob Stanfield to catch Moore. Stanfield surged ahead to Moore in turns three and four to claim the victory. Thanks to coming home in fifth place, John Clauson claimed the season points crown.

Rob Stanfield shot past teammate John Huebner two laps into the final Auto Value MIni-Van feature. As Stanfield pulled away from the field, fast qualifier Marshall Rinartz made things challenging for Huebner in the fight over second. Stanfield drove off with yet another feature win and secured the track championship for the season with a grass burnout inside the ‘action track’ quarter-mile as his celebration.

We started the night of chaos with a Packers vs. Vikings vs. Bears battle in the Van Jump. The first jumps between Marshall Rinartz (Bears), Matt Parent (Vikings) and John Clauson (Packers) were so close that they had to do another jump. Matt Parent pulled out a better jump in round two, but the fans wanted to see a third round of jumps. Parent pulled off an even better jump in the third round to secure the victory.

The Steel Wall Crash was the first metal mangling of the evening. Trevar Lay was the first to make contact with his car as it managed to flip on its roof. Dan Osthoff was next up and he played a car-cherto that saw him give a good hard hit to his car and saw it do a full flip and land on all four wheels. The fans got to vote for the winner and the loudest cheers went to Osthoff.

After making a successful debut at Smash-O-Rama, the TwinStunts motorcycle team of Sawyer and Shannon Schmidtman returned to put on another impressive array of motorcycle stunts for the crowd. They performed a breakdance while on their motorcycles that really made the crowd cheer wildly. The highlight of their appearance was the Motorcycle Wheel as one of the brothers did a complete 360 without leaving the motorcycle thanks to a curvature attached to the bike.

A Mini-Van was hijacked by Big Dave, who decided to be the driver to wreck a trailer in the Camper T-Bone. Big Dave made a solid hit to the right side of the camper, then made even harder contact with the left side that destroyed the camper into a million little teeny pieces.

Next up was the wild and unpredictable Rollover Contest. Four brave souls tried to be Hollywood Stuntmen and pull off a perfect roll of their vehicles. We had a three-way tie for first place after the first turns. Only Bailey Ahlert was able to complete a successful second rollover to win the competition.

The Monster Trucks put on another awesome display of car crunching power and big air jumps that left the fans screaming for more. Josh Baumgartner brought back the Bigfoot monster truck, which was celebrating the 50th anniversary of its debut. Kayla Erickson, in only her third time ever behind the wheel of one of these massive vehicles, brought out the bare bones Misfit monster truck and left the fans speechless with her impressive performance of speed, power and leaping ability.

Four drivers were out to put on the best smoke show for the fans in the Burnout Contest. First time challenge Trevar Lay was the first to go and put on a very impressive effort that may have left with a flat tire. Colton Jacobson was next to burn it down and he put on an equally amazing effort to warm up the fans on a rather chilly evening. The fans had a tough decision to make between these two smoking truckers, and it would be a very narrow victory in favor of Colton Jacobson.

Six racers brought out their everyday vehicles to see who is the baddest racer in the Spectacular Drags. Jake won the first race in the first battle, while Adam turned Jake in turn three to win the second race, and in the winner-take-all finale Adam pulled away from Jake to claim the victory. Colton Jacobson won race one in the second match race, Reed Rasmussen turned Jacobson off the start line to win the second race, and Rasmussen got the better of Jacobson to claim the finale. Brandon Bion made quick work of his competition to score a sweep. A three-way drag race would decide the champion as Jacobson survived his other two challengers to win the grand finale.

You have seen a Piano Smash several times before, but Mitchell Rinartz was going to accomplish the first ever TV Smash. Rinartz picked up speed and aimed his vehicle at a HD TV and its entertainment center. Thanks to Rinartz the TV and the entertainment center was obliterated to bits.

A record 35 competitors brought out all sorts of trailers to be smashed and trashed in the Trailer Race of Destruction. The track was littered with a massive amount of debris and the race would be stopped at halfway for the track being clogged with all sorts of trailers in turn one. After the cleanup, the race resumed but traffic would be clogged again in turn one to bring the race to an end. The fans had the final say on who would be the ‘Master of Mayhem’. Cassidy Oldenburg pulled off a Trailer Race first when he drove his vehicle into the back of a wrecked camper and rode in it the rest of the race. That shocked and stunned the fans as they gave Oldenburg the loudest cheers to win the event.

After the aerial fireworks set off by Skyline Fireworks, the Magdatude jet car came out to do a double decker car burnout for the ground fireworks. Using 200 gallons of raw jet fuel, Magdatude needed only about five minutes to incinerate both cars to their raw metal frames and gave the crowd a toasty warm sendoff to draw the Night of Destruction to a close.

You have about a month to get yourself well prepared to take in four days of thrilling racing, get togethers with your racing family, and great memories that will be created on and off the track. The LaCrosse Speedway brings their 2025 racing season to a climatic finish with the 56th running of the Oktoberfest Race Weekend on October 2, 3, 4 and 5. After the Camper Village welcomes the racing masses to LaCrosse on September 29 at 12 Noon and all-day practice takes place on October 1, we begin the amazing racing competition that Oktoberfest has long been famous for starting on October 2. The Reffner 88 takes on a whole new look with 22 lap features taking place for the Super Late Model Futures and the Super Late Models Knights, plus a pair of 22 lap features for the LaCrosse Late Models. The LaCrosse Sportsmen, LaCrosse Hornets and LaCrosse Street Stocks battle one last time this year and settle their year-long title fights. The night comes to a wild and compelling conclusion as race cars from all sorts of divisions will battle in the annual Double-O Race. Gates open at 2:25, the first ‘Faster Than a Speeding Bullet’ battles in qualifying fire up at 2:45 and the night of feature fights galore steps on the gas at 6.
