When a very popular and successful driver runs into one mechanical situation after another or just flat out cannot catch a break, their fan base grows and the fans want to see that driver make a triumphant return to Victory Lane. The fans believe that the racing season is not complete without seeing that driver traveling to the winners’ circle. Here at the LaCrosse Speedway that situation could apply to Adam Degenhardt. With a feature win under his belt earlier in the season, Degenhardt has run into a ton of tough luck since then that made him wonder if he would see another feature triumph. Getting around Tom Luethe just before halfway, Degenhardt held off both Skylar Holzhausen and Jacob Goede on a late race restart to score his second feature victory of the year.
Jeremy Wolff (Chaska, MN) powered around the outside of Cole Howland (LaCrosse, WI) to settle into first on lap two of the Coulee Tire 25 lap NASCAR Late Model feature. Howland would not let Wolff get away that easily but the lapped car of Jimmy Summerfield (West Salem, WI) allowed to get back in front. Contact between the leaders in turn four resulted in them spinning out but fortunately there was no wall or car contact. Tom Luethe (West Salem, WI) took over the most valuable position on the restart as Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) drove under Nick Clements (West Salem, WI) to move into second. At halfway the best battle on the track was over third between Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) and Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) as Degenhardt was slowly reeling in Leuthe. Degenhardt looked high, then low for a way by Luethe before he got a run down the back straight and powered around Luethe to become the leader of the pack with eight laps remaining. Holzhausen shot to the inside and surged past Luethe to move into second with only two laps to go. At the same time Bendick made contact with Luethe, who tried to squeeze back into line. Unfortunately Luethe spun coming out of turn two to cause a wild two-lap showdown. It got even wilder when Holzhausen went behind Degenhardt, while Goede chose the outside on the double up. Goede could not make it stick on the outside as Degenhardt pulled away to a huge feature win that blew away his hard luck this season. After the race Degenhardt said “I was not really fond of the late yellows, but I cannot complain about how good the car was tonight.”
An issue with the car of Melissa Rusch (Holmen, WI) at the start of the NASCAR Sportsmen feature allowed Bob Fort (Fountain City, WI) to move into first place. Tina Lodermeier (Rosemount, MN) powered by Mike Borchardt (Prior Lake, MN) for second on lap two and quickly tracked down Fort. Those two drivers got locked into a fast and furious battle for the lead, which saw Lodermeier get a good run out of turn four to take over the number one spot. After a yellow for a solo spin by Zach Oliver (Rockland, WI) in turn two on lap eight, Lodermeier went right back to work pulling away from Fort. That was short lived as a hard hit for Borchardt with the wall coming out of turn four ended his race early. Lodermeier again started to pull away from Fort on the restart as Charles Vian, Jr. (Sparta, WI) began to make up ground on multi-time track champion Fort. With only five laps left to race, Vian, Jr. shot around Fort to take over second and go after Lodermeier for the win. Vian, Jr. got loose and nearly brushed the wall on the next to last lap as Lodermeier held on to claim her second win of the year.
Bentley Knaack powered around Nick Loesel to lead the early laps of the NASCAR Hornet feature. Former champion Ben Thurk used the outside lane to shoot past Knaack for the top spot on lap three. Heat winner Al Bartels and reigning track champion Shane Kohlemeier duked it out over second for several laps while Thurk pulled out to a huge advantage. The fight over second grew to five cars, including championship contenders Jimmy Bjorkman, Kohlmeier and Joey Johnson. Kohlmeier broke from the pack with five laps remaining, but ran out of time to challenge Thurk for the victory.
The start of the Street Stock feature saw heat winner Brody Rundhaugen power by Kyle Cottone for the lead, but soon would have to contend with Brandon Gallagher. Gallagher used the outside lane to shoot past Rundhaugen to settle into first on lap four. The always fast and competitive Jay Raines, Jr. stuck right behind Gallagher for several laps as he waited for the right moment to go after the lead. Raines, Jr. to make the outside work, but Gallagher got a better run coming out of the turns. Raines, Jr. got loose coming to three laps left to run as Kaleb Hardy took over the runner-up position. Gallagher let them fight among themselves as he drove off with yet another feature win.
Jeremiah Neal and Angel Johnson fought hard for the lead at the start of the High School Racing Association feature. Johnson got in front of Neal but went up the track in turn two, which allowed Izaak Odegard to power into first on lap three. Odegard got loose in turn four on lap six and bounced off the tractor tire, allowing Braxtyn Moore to surge into first place. A lap later Alivia Moore drove her way into second and began her pursuit of the lead from cousin Braxtyn. A yellow for debris led to a four-lap showdown between the Moores as Braxtyn held a tight grip on the lead to wrap up his third straight feature win. Alivia maintained second to wrap up her second straight LaCrosse HSRA Championship.
This week’s wild and wooly Spartan Recycling and Salvage Novelty event was the 3rd Over the Line Wins Race. The drivers have to use patience to make the others flinch in order to be the winner of the race. The action came down to the jostling and jockeying for position in turns three and four, resulting in five wide across the finish line and former Street Stock champion Steven Brasda waited at just the right moment to claim the win.
Weekly racing comes to a close next Saturday, August 15 with a double dose of high powered racing action. The Double Feature Showdown will have the Late Models, Sportsmen, Hornets, Street Stocks, Mini-Vans and Great North Legends competing in a pair of action packed feature races. Our Novelty division will decide their champion for 2026 with their last fun race of the season, the Flagpole Race. Gates open at 5:15, the race against the clock in qualifying starts at 5:30 and the fender rubbing double play of feature action will be locked and loaded at 7.
