The highlight of the summer season are the county fairs that bring all ages together from across the county to enjoy some good times. You will always find some great entertainment during a county fair, no matter how old or how young you are. Since 1981, the LaCrosse Interstate Fair has provided all ages with great amusements on the midway and great entertainment that everyone can enjoy. The 135th edition provided some great thrills and action on the ovals of the LaCrosse Speedway with the running of the Wisconsin Kenworth Fair Time 50. Just when it looked like Adam Degenhardt’s hard luck would make a major turn around, Skylar Holzhausen powered into first with six laps remaining to capture the big 50 lap feature at the fair for a third straight year.
The fast and furious NASCAR Late Models had a long 50 lap journey in the Wisconsin Kenworth Fair Time 50. Rookie Carter Horstman (Bangor, WI) powered by Tom Carlson (West Salem, WI) to settle into first place as he led his first-ever Late Model feature laps. Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) shot by Carlson to settle into second and began to close the distance on Horstman. Bendzick moved to the outsider entering turn three on lap three and came out of turn four with the race lead. Tom Luethe (West Salem, WI) and Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) drove around Horstman on lap six to second and third. Degenhardt wanted more as he dove low on Luethe on lap eight to capture second spot. Luethe had a major swarm of race cars behind him as he was desperate to hold onto third. Steve Bachman (Bangor, WI), Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) and Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) dove to the inside of Luethe to dismiss him from the top five by lap 14. Lapped traffic was becoming a factor that was allowing Degenhardt to slowly reel in Bendzick for the lead. Bachman began pulling away from the top two in the title race Goede and Holzhausen fought tooth-and-nail over fourth. Back up front Degenhardt powered around Bendzick to capture the top position on lap 23. Degenhardt was starting to drive away from Bendzick, while Bachman began to catch up to Bendzick past the halfway point of the race. Holzhausen got around Goede to take over fourth spot, and set his sights on Bachman and a podium finish. The pass for third by Holzhausen took place with 20 laps remaining, while four laps later Holzhausen shot around Bendzick for second. Could Holzhausen catch Degenhardt in the final 15 laps of the race? Lapped traffic played a major role in those final 15 laps as Holzhausen stuck right behind Degenhardt and dove to the inside entering turn one to shoot himself right into the lead with six laps to go. Holzhausen pulled away from Degenhardt over those final few laps to win the 50 lapper for the third straight year and wrap up feature triumph number three of 2026. After the race Holzhausen said “LaCrosse has some of the best competition in the Midwest, and it is what keeps me coming back week after week to race in front of my hometown fans.”
Travis Gordon (LaCrescent, MN) shot past Landon Lockington (Melrose, WI) for the early lead in the NASCAR Sportsmen feature. Tina Lodermeier (Rosemount, MN) quickly caught and passed Gordon for the top spot on lap three. Gordon had his hands full trying to contain Charles Vian, Jr. (Sparta, WI) and Jacob Lodermeier (Elko New Market, MN), but both drivers were struggling to maintain pace as Gordon held onto second. Gordon suddenly dropped off the pace with five laps to go, giving second to Jacob Lodermeier and third to Vian, Jr. Melissa Rusch (Holmen, WI) was trying to wrestle third away from Vian, Jr. over the closing laps, but Vian, Jr. got on the gas sooner in the turns to stake his claim to third with just two laps left. Tina led a Lodermeier one-two finish to capture her second checkered flag victory of the year.
Shaw Strangstalien tried to go three-wide in turn three and spun out. Amazingly everyone but Nick Hadler was able to avoid Strangstalien, which led to a complete restart of the NASCAR Hornet feature. Take two was scrapped after Greg Oliver and Ben Kohlmeier made contact in turn one and spun each other out. Iverson would get swallowed up on the restart by his own brother Jacob and Braxtyn Moore as he fell back to third. Moore continued to set the pace ahead of Jacob Iverson and defending champion Shane Kohlmeier as we reached the halfway point. Using lapped traffic as a pick allowed Moore to pull away from the field to notch his second Hornet feature win this year, and his third overall this year at LaCrosse.
Bryan Olsen led the first lap of the Six Shooter feature, but Cole Lewis found a way around to wrestle the lead position away from Olsen. Peyton Payne survived a four-wide battle on the inside line to drive underneath Lewis to claim the top spot on lap four. A lap later Dan Osthoff broke free from those battles to settle into second and began to slowly close the distance Payne held on him. Osthoff began to look from a way around Payne first to the inside, then to the outside. Payne held off a dive bomb move by Osthoff entering turn one on the final lap to win the feature in his Six Shooter debut.
Angel Johnson powered past Jeremiah Neal for first in the High School Racing Association feature, but Zachary Neal made a sneaky move under both of them coming out of turn four to settle into first place. Lilly Estenson quickly caught up to Neal and shot around him for the lead on lap four. Soon Estenson’s mirrors would be full of the green and white machine of Caleb Arenson, but yellow slowed the race on lap seven when Lauralee Stanton and Neal tangled in turn one. Estenson shot back in front of Arenson on the restart, but Arenson would drive around her to claim the lead position on lap eight. Estenson had her hands full with Kennedy Krueger and Alivia Moore all over her in their quest to move into second. Arneson was long gone as he added an HSRA feature triumph to his first-ever Street Stock win last week.
Roger Peterson hung tough on the outside before clearing Lloyd Wilkinson and taking the lead on lap three of the Upper Midwest Vintage Racing Series feature. Dan Linnehan finally shot past Wilkinson to take over second on lap four, then surged past Peterson to lead the pack on lap five. It would not take very long for Jason Stark and Jake Arneson to close up on the leader. Both Linnehan and Stark put on a great side-by-side battle for the lead as Stark tried to use the outer lane to make his way by Linnehan. Arenson and Jerimy Wagner had the best view of that back and forth battle in third and fourth. Stark got loose in turn two on the final lap, and that allowed Linnehan to power away with a big home track victory.
One of the Novelty races of last week’s Stock Car Summer Games was brought back for another go-round with a new group of drivers. The Flagpole Race had the drivers go completely around the ‘flagpole’ in turn one for every lap of the five-lap race. Only six drivers competed versus the 14 that raced last week, but it was still a very chaotic race. Leaders Dan Osthoff and John Eron had to deal with the rest of the field coming to the ‘flagpole’ as they were going around it. Osthoff pulled away from Eron over the final laps to win the race.
With the Fair Time 50 in the books, we now begin the stretch run of the 2026 season that will eventually crown champions. The road to those track titles begins on Saturday, July 25 with the next round of twin 20 lap features for the Late Models. The Sportsmen, Hornets, Street Stocks and Mini-Vans will also be in action, plus the intense competition of the Orange Cone Novelty Race will leave you on the edge of your seat. A future racing star can be born early when they get to ride in a race car during the KQ98 Kids’ Rides that will take place after qualifying. Gates open at 5:15, the fast and furious qualifying session takes to the track at 5:30 and the high octane racing competition squeals the tires at 7.
