Last year the LaCrosse Speedway debuted an auto racing version of the Summer Olympics with the Novelty Summer Games. It was a wildly successful competition as the drivers of the ‘action track’ quarter-mile ran a gauntlet of seven different events to determine a champion. This year the Novelty Summer Games were run as a part of our mid-season Quarter-Mile Mania event. It was another wild and thrilling competition as Rob Stanfield would capture the overall title for a second consecutive year. Besides that test of wills in a very daunting seven Novelty events, there was some thrilling racing action featuring our regular quarter-mile divisions that were just as exciting as our Novelty Summer Games.
Making his first ever regular season visit to LaCrosse, champion racer Mike Gratz made a smashing debut in the Street Stocks. Winning his heat race earlier, Gratz drove around Ryan Stanfield for the lead on lap five of the feature. Gratz survived two yellow flags and a late race charge by Tim Murphy, Sr. to score his first ever feature triumph at LaCrosse.
A large field of 16 Six Shooters fought tooth and nail for 15 laps in their A-main of the night. Brandon Bion and Dakota Clauson put on one whale of a side-by-side battle for the first five laps before Clauson shot into the top spot on a restart. Thanks to using lap traffic as a pick, two-time HSRA champion Ashton Kinsey powered around Clauson with three laps remaining to capture his first Six Shooter feature victory.
Matthew Parent and Rob Stanfield put on a hard fought show in the Mini-Van feature. They battled side-by-side for several laps before Stanfield tried to dive to the inside of Parent. When that did not work, Stanfield reset and tried to go for the win again. Parent was up to the challenge and held on for the victory.
The High School Racing Association feature saw Alivia Moore power around James Gratz on lap seven and drove off with her second feature victory this year. Halfway through their season the girls have won all three HSRA features run at LaCrosse.
The gauntlet of the Novelty Summer Games continued with race number four, the Double Spin to Win Race. Everybody did their two spins in the first two laps. That allowed Rob Stanfield to drive away to his third gold medal of this marathon of racing. The Novelty Summer Games was nearing the finish line with the Drive-Thru race, the fifth competition of the night. Half the field dropped their popcorn off at the drive-thru right after the green flag flew. That was very advantageous for Rob Stanfield as he claimed gold medal number four. The sixth battle of the Novelty Summer Games was the Orange Cone Race. Drivers had to balance an orange cone on their hood for five laps as a sort of “Last Driver Standing” race. Steven Brasda built up a huge lead as he showed amazing race car control to win the race.
The grand finale of the Novelty Summer Games was the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. A large field of 16 drivers battled their way through the field in total darkness. Andy Moore shot past Ashton Kinsey to lead the early few laps of the race. Kinsey stayed only a few car lengths behind the LaCrosse veteran racer, but the lapped traffic allowed Moore to pull away to an enlightening victory. The overall champion of the 2025 Novelty Summer Games was Rob Stanfield for a second straight year.
A long standing tradition in LaCrosse County begins on Wednesday, July 16 as the 134th edition of the LaCrosse Interstate Fair starts up. Folks from far and wide will be enjoying the rides, feasting on great fair food, plus checking out the competitions and exhibits all week long. We start this year’s fair with the return of Wednesday night racing at the LaCrosse Speedway during our $5 Family Fun Night. The Central Wisconsin Racing Association Late Models will compete in a pair of 25 lap feature races, while the Great North Legends will race on the ‘action track’ quarter-mile for 20 laps. The best part of the night is that admission for everyone 12 and up will be just a $5 bill. Gates open at 5:00, the battle to be the top gun in qualifying starts at 5:30 and the thrilling close quarters racing action kicks off at 7.
