Sometimes we all need to take a break from the fast and furious pace we live. Race car drivers also need to take a break when they run into a rough stretch of racing that tries to stymie their efforts. That was the case with Skylay Holzhausen’s recent two week run of bad luck here at the LaCrosse Speedway. With the Late Models off for Smash-O-Rama last week, that turned out to be a much needed break and recharging for Holzhausen and his race team. Holzhausen powered to the front from his seventh starting spot eight laps into the NASCAR Late Model feature and drove away from the field to score his second checkered flag win this season.
Tony Leis (Middle Ridge, WI) shot past Cole Howland (LaCrosse, WI) to lead the early stages of the Pischke Motors 25 lap NASCAR Late Model feature. Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) followed right behind Leis and found a way around Leis to take command of the race on lap three. Two laps later Degenhardt’s mirrors would be filling up with the purple and white machine of Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI). By lap eight Holzhausen zoomed past Degenhardt to put himself in the number one position. Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) powered by Degenhardt to take over second spot on lap 11, and tried to close up the distance Holzhausen had over the field. Steve Bachman (Bangor, WI) surged past Degenhardt to dismiss him from the top three as the crosses flags were displayed. Degenhardt’s night came to a sudden end with eight laps to go when he suffered an engine failure. Bendzick was not making any headway in catching up to Holzhausen as the laps continued to click away. He does not always have to be the fastest car, but Holzhausen has the best car on the track as he drove away with his second feature victory this year. After the race Holzhausen said “We took a vacation after the couple bad weeks we had to clear ourselves and it helped to get our racing efforts back on track.”

Charles Vian, Jr. (Sparta, WI) powers to the front at the start of the NASCAR Sportsmen feature. Defending track champion Bob Fort (Fountain City, WI) was in hot pursuit of Vian, Jr. Both pushed the limits of the breakout time twice during the race. In the end Vian, Jr. pulled out to a large advantage over Fort and ran away with the victory.

Al Bartels powers around Mitchell Rinartz to settle into first place on lap five of the Skyline Fireworks NASCAR Hornet feature. Bartels left the competition in his wake and ran away with another victory to add to his nearly 40 years of racing on nothing but quarter mile race tracks.

In the Six Shooter feature, Matt Moore powered by Alex Rud to settle into the lead with six laps left in the race. Moore pulled away from the field down the stretch to capture another checkered flag to go in his victory display case.

What turned into a difficult night for point leader Noah Waughtal turned into a big night for Peyton Payne in the High School Racing Association. Payne quickly takes the lead in the feature and runs away with her first ever LaCrosse feature win. This gate-to-wire run follows up her two feature wins in Illinois the night before.
In the Drive-Thru Novelty Race, each driver had a box of popcorn they needed to deposit in the bucket at some point during the five laps. If you do not get the popcorn in the bucket, you are black flagged. Steven Brasda was one of the first drivers to make that early deposit and ended up driving away the win.
We end the month of June with a blockbuster program of racing next Saturday, June 28. The Late Models will run another pair of 20 lap features and they will be joined by the Sportsmen, Hornets, Street Stocks and Mini-Vans. The very challenging Hot Dog race will be that night’s Novelty event, plus the American Super Cup Series will make their annual appearance on the ‘action track’ quarter-mile. Gates open at 5:15, the race against the clock in qualifying revs up at 5:30 and the battle for checkered flag victories starts at 7.
