August 27, 2013 (West Salem, WI.) – As the 2013 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season is drawing to a close, the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model drivers are preparing for another event at the popular 5/8th mile oval.
This Saturday night is the second annual Volden Construction Shootout: Match Race Showdown for the top eight seeded drivers in the speedway’s Late Model division.
Fans have watched over the years the Thunderstox and Hornet Drivers participate in many of the fan favorite “novelty events” put on at the track. Now, it’s the Late Model drivers’ turn. It’s a bracket of drivers, similar to drag racing, where the winner advances and the loser does not. No points are awarded, but bonus money and bragging rights are on the line.
Each match race will consist of two drivers, for three laps. The driver with the lowest seed gets lane choice (top or bottom) for the green flag. The winner advances on. If there is a caution in any match, the leader gets lane choice for restart. The final round will have the drivers run up to three three-lap matches, where the driver who wins two is the champion.
In the first round, top seed Steve Carlson will run against 8th Nick Clements, 4th seed Todd Korish vs. 5th Adam Degenhardt, Brad Powell, 3rd seed against 6th Branden Berg, and the final bracket will feature 2nd seed J. Herbst challenge Brent Kirchner, the 7th seeded driver.
“I’m looking forward to it, especially running up against the soon-to-be Late Model Track Champion,” commented driver Nick Clements. “It’s something fun for the drivers, different for the fans, and I’m looking for this to build momentum towards Oktoberfest and the 2014 season,” concluded Clements.
The Volden Construction Match Races are just a part of the events taking place this Saturday night, as the evening will conclude the 2013 weekly racing and include a full program of Late Model, Sportsmen and Thunderstox action. Gates open at 6:00, Qualifying at 6:15 and the first race begins at 7:30.
