When the NASCAR Late Models here at the LaCrosse Speedway prepare to battle in their twin 20 lap feature races, it presents a whole new strategy for both the competitors and the race teams. The setup for the opening feature would be as if the drivers are running the normal 25 lap feature event weekly. After their performance in the first feature, the drivers report back to their teams about what was and was not working to find the perfect setup to compete in the second 20 lap main event. Starting tonight the NASCAR Late Models had four double features scheduled and the championship duo of Skylar Holzhausen and Jacob Goede were ready to put on another exciting title fight right down to Oktoberfest. Two different drivers were the stars of tonight’s latest twin features. Steve Carlson put in another solid ‘start to finish’ effort to notch his third feature win of the year in the opener. A long rough season for Nick Clements went away after a strong gate-to-wire performance in the nightcap.
The first 20 lap Busch Light feature for the NASCAR Late Models saw Steve Carlson (West Salem, WI) shoot past pole sitter Nick Clements (West Salem, WI) to lead the opening laps. Tom Luethe (West Salem, WI) got a run coming out of turn four to move into second at the end of lap two and began to work on tracking down “The King of the Short Tracks”. Smoke trailed from the rear of the car of Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) on lap seven and brought his feature to an early end. Luethe began to slowly reel in Carlson as we passed by the midway mark of the race. Point leaders Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) and Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) put on a great tussle for fourth, but the action was interrupted by a spinning rookie Robert Bradley (Sparta, WI) in turn two with eight laps left to run. Carlson got a power run underneath Luethe in turn two to hold onto the lead position with seven laps to go. Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) and Goede also stuck to the inside lane to dismiss Luethe from the top three with five laps remaining. While Bendzick, Goede and Holzhausen put on a big fight over second down the stretch, Steve Carlson pulled away to capture his third feature triumph of 2026. After the race Carlson said “I was not sure if I would get by Clements at the start, and then I had to worry about Luethe tracking me down.”
Nick Clements (West Salem, WI) shot past Tom Carlson (West Salem, WI) to lead the early going of 20 lap Busch Light NASCAR Late Model feature number two. Steve Bachman (Bangor, WI) tried to make a move under Carlson on lap three, but spun in turn one and gave Cole Howland (LaCrosse, WI) nowhere to go. Clements pulled away from Carlson quickly on the restart, while Mike Carlson (West Salem, WI) had Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) and Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) quickly catching him. Carlson fell back to fifth on lap six as the championship duo were trying to made up the distance on the two front runners. After taking the crossed flags, Goede and Holzhausen were not making up any ground on veteran Tom Carlson. Holzhausen tried peeking to the inside of Goede before making the pass under his main title rival for third with six laps to go. Holzhausen continued his forward progress by driving around Carlson for second just four laps from the end. Holzhausen was giving it everything he could to catch the blue 8 machine, but a gate-to-wire performance finally got the proverbial season-long monkey off of Clements’ back. After the race Clements said “We have experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows throughout the season, but we kept plugging away and would never quit.”
The start of the AB Seed and Consulting NASCAR Sportsmen feature was scrapped after Justin Berg (Bangor, WI) suffered a flat tire in turn two. Take number two saw Bob Fort (Fountain City, WI) power by Zach Oliver (Rockland, WI) to settle into the lead. Oliver continued to be relentless in his pursuit of Fort and the lead of the race as Charles Vian, Jr. (Sparta, WI) took over third from a suddenly slowing Travis Gordon (LaCrescent, MN). Tina Lodermeier (Rosemount, MN) had a strong car on the outside as she leapt from fourth to second at Oliver and Vian, Jr.’s expense. Lodermeier peeked high, then low on Fort for the win as the laps began to countdown. Fort got a better run through turns three and four to give his new pavement modified its first feature victory.
First-time racer Taylor Wagenknecht got a push from Glen Bush, Jr. to lead the first lap of the Skyline Fireworks NASCAR Hornet feature. Bush, Jr. shot under Wagenknecht to stake his claim to first on the second lap. Jake Schomers stuck right behind Bush, Jr. to make his own move on the low side to capture the lead spot. Lapped traffic allowed Joey Johnson III to close the gap on Schomers for first place and the win. Johnson dove low on Schomers to charge out of turn two with the race lead only four laps from the finish. Contact with another car sent Greg Oliver into the tractor tire in turn three to bring out a caution period and set up a two lap race to the finish. Shane Kohlmeier and Johnson got into a heated fight in that final showdown, and Kohlmeier would power around Johnson in the final turns to claim his first feature win of the year.
Dan Osthoff tried to squeeze himself in between Colton Jacobson and Brody Rundhaugen at the start of the Auto Value Street Stock feature. After backing off of that daring move, Osthoff dove down low on Jacobson down the back straight on lap two to settle into first place. Jacobson and Rundhaugen got into their own fight over second, which was soon joined by Rob Stanfield. Bryon Olsen dropped some debris on the front straight that resulted in a yellow flag with just four laps to go. Osthoff maintained the top spot despite having Rob Stanfield all over him and looking for a way by. Stanfield tried to make the outside lane work on the ‘action track’ quarter-mile, but Osthoff just nipped Stanfield at the line for the victory.
Alex Rud shot past John Mashak to lead the opening four laps of the Mini-Van feature. John Clauson had a rocket ship that was getting larger and larger in Rud’s rear view. Despite lapped traffic being an obstacle, Clauson drove past Rud to take over first place at the end of lap five. It was just like a Super Mario video game as Clauson ran away with his second feature win this year.
Slow and steady would win this week’s Novelty event, the Cone Race. All of our competitors had to balance an orange cone on the roof of their race vehicles and keep it there for the entire seven laps of the race. John Clauson led the first four laps before the cone slid off his Mini-Van roof. Leaders Cole Lewis and Zach Liebsch lost their cones coming to the finish, and that allowed John Eron to claim his first career race win at LaCrosse.
The most fan friendly event of the season takes place next Saturday, August 1 as the Trailer Race of Destruction will leave the race fans screaming from all the hard hitting action. Before we wrap up the night with that thrilling metal mangling mayhem, you will witness a ton of action packed racing with the Late Models, Sportsmen, Hornets, Six Shooters and the High School Racing Association. Gates open at 5:15, the battle to be top gun in qualifying goes green at 5:30 and the ‘edge of your seat’ close quarters racing heats up the asphalt beginning at 7.
