August 12, 2017 (West Salem, WI) – Jacob Goede had a night off from his regular Saturday night racing gig, and knew where he wanted to spend it – at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway.
Goede made the trip from his home in Carver, Minn., to West Salem pay off, as he swiped the lead from hot-running Mike Carlson with nine laps remaining in the Tobacco Outlet Plus Late Model feature race, then held it the rest of the way to win the 25-lap feature before a packed crowd.
Goede held off Carlson, then Brad Powell to earn his feature race of the season. It was a good night for Nick Panitzke, too, as the Lonsdale, Minn., driver finished fourth and took over the points lead from Steve Carlson. Carlson, who qualified 11th, finished sixth in the feature and fell one point (644-643) behind Panitzke.
It appears the race for the Late Model track championship will come down to next week, with double features scheduled, or perhaps the season-ending Oktoberfest Race Weekend, set for Oct. 4-8.
Fast-time qualifier Mike Carlson started sixth and quickly overpowered the competition to take an early lead, but couldn’t hold off the hard-charging Goede.
Randy Humfeld picked up his fourth feature win of the season in the Dean’s Satellite Sportsmen division.
Humfeld took the lead after the second caution of the main event. Second-place finisher Brad Warthan had the lead when the yellow came out. When the drivers had to choose a lane for the restart Warthan chose the high side, where he had been dominating all feature long.
When they got the green, Humfeld moved into the top position and held off Warthan for the final five laps.
Steve Bachman finished in the third spot.
Hard-charging Adam Moore took home the checkered flag in the Auto Value Thunderstox 15-lap feature. Moore started in the back of the field and steadily made his way through traffic to take the lead from second-place finisher Joey Johnson with only a hand full of laps left in the main event. This was Moore’s seventh feature win of the season.
Brandon LeMoine edged Mark Bornitz in the ANTS Pest Control Hornets feature. LeMoine lasted through four-wide racing and two cautions to hold off Bornitz by inches at the line; capturing the checkered flag.
Glen Bush Jr. won the 15-lap Subway Restaurants Outlawz feature after qualifying in the top spot.
Next week the Tobacco Outlet NASCAR Late Models run two 20-Lap features, and joining them are the Dean’s Satellite Sportsmen, Auto Value Thunderstox, Street Stocks.
