BENDZICK AND LUETHE HANDLE A SLICK RACE TRACK TO CLAIM HUGE FEATURE VICTORIES AT LACROSSE

As we make our way through the hot and steamy summer season, the weather itself can prove to be a challenge for racers.  Cooler weather gives a lot more bite to the race track for the drivers, but the steamy weather can make things a bit tougher for the drivers to negotiate their  way around the track.  A sultry summer Saturday made the action a bit more intense for the competitors here at the LaCrosse Speedway with a slick race track.  Throw in a pair of 20 lap features for the NASCAR Late Models and you had the perfect recipe for some thrilling ‘edge of your seat’ racing.  Adam Benzick powered underneath Adam Degenhardt with six laps to go in the opening feature and drove off with his second feature triumph this year.  A late race yellow flag would not stop Tom Luethe from dominating the nightcap and capturing his second gate-to-wire feature win in about a month.

Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) led the opening laps of the first Bobcat of the Coulee Region 20 lap NASCAR Late Model feature.  Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) was the first of the front runners to crack the top three as he powered under rookie Jason Stark (Wisconsin Dells, WI) on lap five.  Three laps later Bendzick would wrestle second away from Jeremy Wolff, while Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) and Skyiar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) broke into the top five shortly after that.  Just past halfway of the opening A-main Goede and Holzhausen shot past Wolff to move up to third and fourth, respectively.  Bendzick was slowly reeling in Degenhardt for the top spot, and Bendzick dove low down the back straight to claim the lead position with six laps to go.  Goede and Holzhausen came together coming out of turn two with five laps to go, but both drivers held onto their cars and continued on with Holzhausen moving into third.  Holzhausen shot underneath Degenhardt with three laps remaining, but could not catch the leader in time as Bendzick claimed his second feature win of the season.  After the race Bendzick said “We had a great race with (Adam) Degenhardt and can understand the struggles he has been having this season.”

Tom Luethe (West Salem, WI) powered to the front right from the start of the second 20 lap Bobcat of the Coulee Region feature for the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models.  Bryan Wrolstad (Faribault, MN)  moved up to second on lap three as he tried to keep pace with Luethe.  As Luethe began to open up his advantage, the yellow flew on lap eight when Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) lost control of his race car and collected the outside wall in turn three.  Luethe began to pull away from Wrolstad on the restart as Steve Bachman (Bangor, WI) began to creep forward to challenge Wrolstad for second.  Jacob Goede and Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) powered their way past Steve Carlson at halfway to move into the top five.  Bachman began to apply the pressure on Wrolstad in the closing laps, knowing that Goede and Holzhausen were coming.  A dramatic finish was about to play out when the yellow flew with only two laps to go for a spinning Brian Lee (Holmen, WI) in turn four.  Luethe pulled away from Wrolstad on the restart as Bachman and Holzhausen moved into the top three.  Luethe drove away from the field with his second feature triumph in a month.  After the race Leuthe said “My crew threw everything we could at the car between races and it was just about perfect in the second feature.”

Jacob Lodermeier (Elko New Market, MN) and Mike Kreuger, Jr. (Sparta, WI) were putting on a great side-by-side battle for several laps in the TDS Telecom NASCAR Sportsmen feature.  Their battle got interrupted with five laps left for a spin into the front straight wall by Zach Oliver (Rockland, WI).  Krueger, Jr. quickly shot past Lodermeier on the restart.  Bob Fort (Fountain City, WI) made things interesting for Krueger, Jr. over the final few laps.  After making some serious contact in turn four coming to the white flag, Krueger, Jr. drove away from Fort to see the checkered flag first.

Greg Oliver put on a great drive in the first half of the Skyline Fireworks NASCAR Hornet feature, nipping Jake Schomers at the line every time. A big pileup in turn four occurred on lap seven when Christopher Lofquist ran into a big tractor tire.  The fierce battle for the lead continued between Oliver and Schomers.  Schomer’s patience finally paid off when he finally got around Oliver with five laps to go and drove off with a long overdue feature victory.

Adam Moore debuted a brand new Street Stock race car and powered by Chad Assum to take over first place on lap two of the feature.  The race turned into a Moore civil war between Adam and Matt.  The lapped car of Brody Rundhaugen caused calamity between the leaders with three laps left to run, but Adam Moore survived the anxious moment to make a return to Victory Lane at LaCrosse.

In just her second ever race, Lauralee Stanton led the opening lap of the feature in the High School Racing Association until she broke a rear axle.  Kennedy Krueger pulled out to the lead on the restart, but soon would have to contend with Alivia Moore.  After surviving her challenges, Krueger would hold off both Noah Waughtal and Caleb Arneson down the stretch to hit the finish line in first.

The entertaining Cone Race was this week’s Novelty event.  You have to balance a cone of the front of your car’s hood for all five laps of the race.  Lose your cone and your race is done.  Kyle Cottone had amazing balance throughout the race to drive away with the victory.

It is by far the most popular Novelty event of the year at the LaCrosse Speedway, and it wraps up the night’s racing action next Saturday, August 2.  Get out to the track early and find a good seat to witness the metal mangling mayhem of the world famous Trailer Race of Destruction.  Before that takes place you will witness the Late Models, Sportsmen, Hornets, Six Shooters and Great North Legends competing on track.  Gates open at 5:15, qualifying goes live at 5:30 and the close quarters racing ending with the high octane Trailer Race takes to the track at 7.
