Even though we are just a matter of days into another steamy summer season, the racing action has started to heat up just as much as the temperatures. Drivers are fighting for every position they can earn to get to the front of the field and score a big points night that could take them to a championship later in the season. The NASCAR Late Model points race at the LaCrosse Speedway is giving Skylar Holzhausen a lot more work to do in his quest for a championship three-peat. The next round of double features that took place tightened up the battle for the season point crown. Former champion Mike Carlson led from gate to wire in the opening race to claim his first feature win this year, while a late race pass by Adam Bendzick on Steve Bachman in feature two showed everyone why Bendzick cannot be looked over as a championship contender.
Mike Carlson (West Salem, WI) shot past Cole Howland (LaCrosse, WI) to lead the opening lap of the first 20 lap Pepsi feature for the NASCAR Late Models. Tom Luethe (West Salem, WI) spun in turn four on lap two, but surprisingly everybody else was able to avoid colliding with Luethe. Carlson pulled away from the pack on the restart as top front runners were struggling to make their way through the field. Don Turner (LaCrosse, WI) looped his car into the turn two grass to cause another yellow flag. Carlson got back to driving away from the field as the drivers took the crossed flags, but Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) and Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) were now making their way to the front. That duo got up to second and third with six laps remaining, but they were unable to make any sort of dent in Carlson’s lead as the 2022 track champion scored at least one feature win for a fourth straight year. After the race Carlson said “We really did not change much to the car after last week. Thanks to the couple of early yellows here we are in victory lane.”
Cole Howland started on the front row again in Pepsi 20 lap NASCAR Late Model feature #2, but would see recent feature winner Tom Luethe charge to the lead right away. Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) and Thayran Rezin (Tomah, WI) banged into each other and ended up in the turn one wall on lap two. Steve Bachmmn (Bangor, WI) stuck right behind Luethe on the restart before moving to the outside lane and taking command of the race on lap four. Bachman maintained a healthy advantage over the field as the halfway signal was displayed from the flagstand. Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) began to slowly reel in Bachman as we got deep into the race. Bendzick looked several times under Bachman before finally driving under Bachman to show the way with five laps to go. Jacob Goede tok over second from Bachman with four laps to go but again could not close the distance on the leader. Bendzick ran a solid race to put himself in the winner’s circle for the first time this season. After the race Bendzick said “I think some people are not paying much attention to us and how much of a factor we are becoming every time we race out here at LaCrosse.”

The NASCAR Sportsmen feature was dominated by a sibling rivalry for much of the race. Tina Lodermeier (Rosemount, MN) and Jacob Lodermeier (Elko New Market, MN) led the first nine laps of the race before Tom Carlson (West Salem, WI) took advantage of a loose Tina Lodermeier to take the lead with five laps left. Carlson lost the lead as quickly as he got it as Bob Fort (Fountain City, WI) surged to the front with four laps left and scored win number three on the year.

Carter Horstman did a masterful job of driving in the NASCAR Hornet feature. Jake Schomers lost the lead to Horstman on lap six of the race, and a late race caution flew with four laps to run gave point leader Shane Kohlmeier a chance at the win. Horstman pulled away from Kohlmeier over that final restart to notch his second feature triumph of the season.

Matt Moore made a power move in between both Curtis Hellickson and Brandon Bion to take first place three laps into the Street Stock feature. It was a Moore family civil war between Moore and Hellickson the rest of the race despite a yellow flag with four laps to go. The battle continued to the checkered flag with Moore outlasting his sibling.

The Mini-Van feature was a hot potato for first early on before John Huebner surged to the front on lap three. A great side-by-side battle between Huebner and Rob Stanfield lasted several laps before Stanfield shot by Huebner to settle into first with six laps remaining. Stanfield held off a late run by Matthew Parent to win the main event.

Michael Rose powered by Michigan racers Greg and Bobby Stanley to move into first place with two laps left to run in the American Super Cup Series feature. Contact between the top six in turns three and four caused some chaos, but everyone kept it together as Rose held on to hit the finish line in first place.

This week’s Novelty event was the very interesting Hot Dog Race. Drivers raced against each other by time on who could consume a hot dog and a soft drink the fastest. Jay Raines, Jr. was the quickest to consume his ‘dinner’ to win the event. There was even a grudge race between one of the Limitless Graphics Safety Team and Wayne Auten driving the pace truck. Auten did not get his hot dog completely down and that allowed the Safety Team to score the win.
The 4th of July holiday weekend is a fun and festive weekend, and we at the LaCrosse Speedway hope you make us a part of your weekend next Saturday, July 5. This festive night of racing will feature the Late Models, Sportsmen, Hornets, Street Stocks, the High School Racing Association and one of most popular Novelty events of the season. You never know what will happen during the outrageous and unpredictable Outhouse Race. We end the night with another big time aerial fireworks display put on by Skyline Fireworks. Gates open at 5:15, the race to be the fastest of the fast hits the ground running at 5:30 and the on-track racing fireworks fire up at 7.
