August 28, 2013 (West Salem, WI) – Last Call! Yes, that’s right race fans, this Saturday night is the final night forweekly racing of the 2013 season! Fans will get one last chance to see all of the great action, featuring the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models, Exhaust Plus / Coulee Region Glass Sportsmen, and United Auto Supply Thunderstox.
Plus, a special treat will be the 2nd annual Volden Construction Shootout: Late Model Match Race Showdown. Top eight seeded drivers in the Late Model division are ready to battle it out on the track until the final bracket has found a winner!
Although Late Model point leader Steve Carlson has the track championship locked in, the season has been a competitive one. Carlson has been tough, with five wins and every other finish a top five in seventeen races, but there have been eight different winners this season, including one first time winner – Ty Majeski, and three drivers ending winless droughts of two or more years – Shawn Pfaff, Todd Korish and Mike Koeneke. WIth two features remaining this season, will fans see another driver surprise the top guns and win a race? There’s still 25 laps to go this Saturday night and 40 laps to complete at Oktoberfest, on Thursday night, Oct. 3rd.
In fact, all three of the speedway’s top classes have eight different winners. Greg Scheck and Jerrod Loging each have four Sportsmen wins, but it’s Steve Bachman with three wins and Scheck who are chasing one time winner Jake Arneson for the championship. Arneson holds approximately a thirty point margin, but one bad race and it would be up for grabs. Adam Moore has been the dominant car in Thunderstox with five wins, but Jordan Myers with four wins is just sixteen points back from the lead. Jason Bolster is a long shot, but still has a chance, being 27 points in arrears of the lead.
Champions will be determined on Thursday night, October 3rd during the Oktoberfest Race Weekend for the Late Model, Sportsmen, Thunderstox and Hornet divisions, while the Outlawz champ will be crowned on Sunday October 6th.
This Saturday night, Grandstand gates open at 6:00, Qualifying at 6:15 and the first race starts at 7:30. General Admission is $13, Students age 12-17 (w/a Student I.D.) are $6, Kids age 6-11 are $4, and children age 5 & under are always FREE. Plus, acres of Parking are available that is always FREE!
Volden Construction Shootout
As the 2013 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season is drawing to a close, the Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Model drivers are preparing for another event at the popular 5/8th mile oval.
This Saturday night is the second annual Volden Construction Shootout: Match Race Showdown for the top eight seeded drivers in the speedway’s Late Model division.
Fans have watched over the years the Thunderstox and Hornet Drivers participate in many of the fan favorite “novelty events” put on at the track. Now, it’s the Late Model drivers’ turn. It’s a bracket of drivers, similar to drag racing, where the winner advances and the loser does not. No points are awarded, but bonus money and bragging rights are on the line.
Each match race will consist of two drivers, for three laps. The driver with the lowest seed gets lane choice (top or bottom) for the green flag. The winner advances on. If there is a caution in any match, the leader gets lane choice for restart. The final round will have the drivers run up to three three-lap matches, where the driver who wins two is the champion.
In the first round, top seed Steve Carlson will run against 8th Nick Clements, 4th seed Todd Korish vs. 5th Adam Degenhardt, Brad Powell, 3rd seed against 6th Branden Berg, and the final bracket will feature 2nd seed J. Herbst challenge Brent Kirchner, the 7th seeded driver.
“I’m looking forward to it, especially running up against the soon-to-be Late Model Track Champion,” commented driver Nick Clements. “It’s something fun for the drivers, different for the fans, and I’m looking for this to build momentum towards Oktoberfest and the 2014 season,” concluded Clements.
The Volden Construction Match Races are just a part of the events taking place this Saturday night, as the evening will conclude the 2013 weekly racing and include a full program of Late Model, Sportsmen and Thunderstox racing. Gates open at 6:00, Qualifying at 6:15 and the first race begins at 7:30.
