For years the racing at the LaCrosse Speedway focused on the big 5/8th-mile track, where some memorable races have been run and unforgettable incidents have taken place. Back in September of 1987, Motorsports Management Services decided to add a unique quarter-mile race track to the facility. Even more memorable races and unforgettable moments occurred with its addition as the track became known as the ‘action track’. A few times a year we give the big track a night off and focus the racing on the quarter-mile. That was the case tonight with the running of our annual Quarter-Mile Mania, and we witnessed a few drivers scoring their first big wins. Caleb Arenson graduated from winning in the HSRA to his first Street Stock feature triumph. Braxtyn Moore captured an impressive HSRA win in his debut. John Clauson made a trip to victory lane in his season debut with the Mini-Vans. We also held our Stock Car Summer Games, and quarter-mile veteran Zach Liebsch became the third different champion of this ‘novelty gauntlet’ in three years.
Cole Lewis got a good run on the inside of Brody Rundhugen to take the lead at the start of the Street Stock feature. Contact between a few drivers led to a flat tire that forced Kyle Cottone to stop on the track and brought out the yellow flag on lap three. Rundhaugen powered back by Lewis to control the field on the restart. Christopher Neal and former HSRA champion Caleb Arneson were on Rundhaugen’s tail for the lead. After disposing of Neal for second on lap six, Arenson stalked Rundhaugen on the outside and finally took over the number one spot with six laps left. As a four-car pack fought hard over second, Arneson pulled away from the field down the stretch to claim his first career six-cylinder feature win outside of the HSRA.
Shawn McCarthy was doing everything he could to hold off Zach Liebsch, but maintained the top spot in the Six Shooter feature. McCarthy finally made quick work of Liebsch to take the lead all by himself on lap four. Liebsch would not let McCarthy get away that easily as he stayed in McCarthy’s tire tracks. McCarthy was getting a better run through the corners, which saw Liebsch start to lose ground to McCarthy and put Ashton Kinsey right on his rear bumper. Kinsesy powered around Liebsch to claim second with six laps left to run, and began to quickly catch up to McCarthy. Kinsey looked high then low, but McCarthy would not be stopped from seeing the checkered flag in first place.
John Clauson wasted little time to get to the front of the Mini-Van feature and pull out to a very sizable advantage. Josh Inglett and Bryan Schott got into their own private tussle over the runner-up spot, but Inglett got loose in turn two at halfway and that allowed Schott to take over second spot. Schott tried to make a dent in Clauson’s huge lead, but Schott was not able to keep up with Clauson’s torrid pace. Clauson’s season debut would be a huge success with a trip to Altra Federal Credit Union Victory Lane.
Braxtyn Moore powered around the outside of Cruz Pierce to nose into the lead at the end of first lap of the High School Racing Association feature. Defending champion Alivia Moore surged past Pierce to take over second on lap three, but had a big mountain to overcome with Braxtyn Moore pulling away from the competition. The yellow flag flew with five laps remaining when Xander Weeks and Angel Johnson made hard contact with each other in turn four. The good news was that Johnson was doing just fine in just her third ever race. Alivia caught a big break to challenge Braxtyn, but the first HSRA driver quickly pulled away from the field to score a huge victory.
We kicked off the 3rd edition of the Stock Car Summer Games with the Flagpole Race. Here you had to make a complete rotation around the ‘flagpole’ for each lap of the five-lap race. With 14 cars participating in this race, it was total chaos and mayhem right from the start. Zach Liebsch has a crazy hard time holding off Dan Osthoff to win the first event of our Stock Car Summer Games.
The next test of endurance and stamina for our drivers was the Tag Team Race. One driver ran a lap, then tagged the bumper of his teammate to run the next lap. This continued for the duration of the five scheduled laps. Seven teams representing different regions fought hard for racing glory. Zach Liebsch and Rob Stanfield have been the two dominant drivers this season on the ‘action track’ quarter-mile, and they proved why as they were the unstoppable forces in this race.
The third battle for stock car supremacy was the 2nd Over the Line Wins Race. You have to time your move just right to be in second and the winner of the race. Go too early and you end up in last. You just never know what crazy moves will be made in turn four coming to the checkered flag. Ryan Stanfield did not slow down to make the rest of the field flinch first. Rob Stanfield held off Zach Liebsch to score his second gold medal of the night.
We reached the halfway point of the 2026 Stock Car Summer Games with the Double Spin to Win Race. The competitors had to make two full 360 degree rotations to remain a part of the race, but when they are done is up to the drivers. ‘Reckless’ John Clauson made both of his spins during the first two laps of the race and he was able to run away with his first gold medal of the games.
We start the second half of the 2026 Stock Car Summer Games with the Drive-Thru Race. Every driver had to stop at the bucket by the McDonald’s sign to drop their flag into it. If they missed, they were disqualified. Steven Brasda dropped his flag into the bucket right at the start. Dan Osthoff dropped his flag on the next to last lap and got in front of Brasda to win the race.
Next up was the Orange Cone Race. Here you had to balance an orange cone on the roof or your race vehicle for the entire 10 laps. Slow and steady was the nature of this race with a whopping 20 drivers competing in this hectic race. Cones were dropping like flies between laps four and seven. In the end only five competitors remained balanced, led by Zach Liebsch who stood tallest of all.
The next to last event was the Outhouse Drags. Two drivers had to push a port-a-potty with another person to a designated spot, then put a new rider in the port-a-potty and pushed it back to the starting point. The team of Cole Lewis, Shawn McCarthy and Brandon Gallagher put on the best showing to win this unique drag racing event.
The grand finale of the Stock Car Summer Games was the Race in Total Darkness. The vehicles in the race only had lights on top of their cars to guide them through the traffic and the ‘action track’ quarter-mile itself. Ashton Kinsey took the lead on lap three of the race and pulled away from a big time fight over second between Rob Stanfield, Dan Osthoff and Zach Liebsch. Kinsey checked out on the field to win the darkest race known to man, while the second place fight would be the top three overall in the Stock Car Summer Games. Liebsch is your 2026 champion over Osthoff and last year’s champion Stanfield.

The 135th edition of the LaCrosse Interstate Fair begins Wednesday, July 15, and there is no better way to start than with some exciting race action. The Central Wisconsin Racing Association Late Models return to one of their home tracks for a pair of 25 lap features as we salute former track promoter Larry Wehrs. Sportsmen drivers from all over the midwest will gather for round two of the inaugural season of the Sportsmen Showdown Series. The fast and ultra-competitive Great North Legends will also be in action for the first of two appearances at LaCrosse this year. Gates open at 5:15, the race against the clock in qualifying takes place at 5:30 and the battles for the racing ‘blue ribbons’ starts at 7.
