While the new generation of racers are on the hunt for wins and looking to make a name for themselves, you never can sleep on the veteran competitors that are still getting the job done. These up-and-coming drivers no doubt admired the veteran racer, and are now trying to emulate those veterans they grew up watching and now are competing against. Here at the LaCrosse Speedway we have a veteran drive that a lot of others look up to and is the gold standard of racing here. That person is the “King of the Short Tracks”, the legendary multi-time track champion Steve Carlson. Carlson took the lead a few laps in the NASCAR Late Model feature, then had to fend off the challenges of several of today’s top guns to add yet another checkered flag feature triumph to his legendary resume.
Andy Barney (West Salem, WI) shot by Don Turner (LaCrosse, WI) to lead the start of State Bank Financial 25 lap NASCAR Late Model feature. Steve Carlson (West Salem, WI) made quick work of Barney to settle into first on lap two. Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) took second from Barney on lap four, and began to eat away at the gap Carlson held on him. Right before halfway Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) caught the lead duo to make the fight for first a bit more entertaining. Soon it turned into a five-way fight just past halfway as Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) and Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) joined the battle. They all remained single file until Goede got sideways in turn four, allowing Holzhausen to claim fourth. Degenhardt got freight trained back to fifth with six laps remaining as the other three drivers roared past him. Carlson pulled away from his competition down the stretch to score a very strong feature triumph. After the race Carlson said “I have to thank Mike for making the right adjustments on my car this week.”
Tina Lodermeier (Rosemount, MN) shot past Jacob Lodermeier (Elko New Market, MN) for the lead at the start of the TDS Telecom NASCAR Sportsmen feature. Despite driving a damaged race car after the Dash, Justin Berg (Bangor, WI) moved into second at halfway and tried to catch Tina Lodermeier. Berg had too much distance to make up as Lodermeier notched her second career Sportsmen feature win at LaCrosse.
Justin Iverson led the first half of Skyline Fireworks NASCAR Hornet feature. Former champ Ben Thurk moved into first after the crossed flags were displayed. Jimmy Bjorkman caught up to Thurk and used the outside lane to shoot past Thurk with three laps to go to claim his second straight feature triumph.
Zach Liebsch got around Cole Lewis on lap four to take the lead in the Auto Value Street Stock feature. Liebsch did his best to fend off Thomas Farra and Rob Stanfield in the closing stages, and Liebsch took his newly painted race car to Altra Federal Credit Union Victory Lane.
Marshall Rinartz made a daring three-wide move to lead the early laps of the Auto Value Mini-Van feature. After a side-by-side battle for several laps with Rinartz, Ryan Stanfield powered into the lead on lap six. Rinartz tried to battle back for the win late in the going, but Stanfield made dad Rob proud with his first division feature win.
The Street Stocks ran this week’s Novelty event, the Spin to Win. Here you have to do a complete 360 at some point during the five lap race. Zach Liebsch did his spin early, but finished second because Thomas Farra did his spin late in the race and held on to score the victory.
The kids will be the kings of the speedway next Saturday, May 30 as our annual Kids’ Night takes place. All kids 11 and under will be admitted FREE, a special giveaway will be taking place during the night, and the first KQ98 Kids’ Rides of the season will take place after qualifying. On the track you will see the Late Models, Sportsmen, Hornets, Six Shooters and the 2nd Over the Line Wins Novelty event. The vintage modifieds of the Milwaukee Stock Car Racing Association make a third visit to LaCrosse to showcase a unique and different kind of race car from back in the day. Gates open at 5:15, the fight to be the fastest in qualifying revs up at 5:30 and the thrilling close quarters racing action hits the gas at 7.
