Every now and again there is an up and coming driver that makes the racing scene and is proving night in and night out that he is the next big thing.  Even when a driver from a talented racing family hits the ground running, you know that this driver has a very bright future ahead of them.  That is definitely the case for rookie Super Late Model racer Ty Fredrickson, who has already captured a handful of major race wins at the tender age of just 15.   Fredrickson would add another crown jewel event to his resume thanks to a dominant performance giving him his first Dick Trickle 99 championship despite some drama at the start of the final segment.  Ty added his first Trickle 99 win to his dad Dan’s four and joined Steve and Skylar Holzhausen as the only father-son duos to become Trickle 99 champions.

The opening segment of the Dick Trickle 99 was dominated by Ty Fredrickson (Webster, MN) as he quickly shot by Michael Hinde (Hernando, FL) to assume command of the race and leave the rest of the field in his wake.  Derek Kraus (Stratford, WI) led the early going of the second segment before losing the lead spot to Justin Mondeik (Gleason, WI).  Mondeik was looking to be a leading overall win contender before the yellow flew with three laps to go for a spin in turn two by Brock Heinrich (Wausau, WI).  Gleason got loose on the final restart and gave Casey Johnson (Edgerton, WI) the opening to steal the win away.  Segment three got off to a rough start with a big crash in turn one that eliminated a third of the field.  Overall contenders like Gabe Sommers (Plover, WI), Riley Stenjem (Utica, WI) and Mondeik got collected and saw their nights end early.  Fredrickson had a tire issue before coming out for the warm-up laps, then had another tire problem after the big wreck.  After changing those tires to used ones and restarting at the back of the field, Fredrickson would power his way through the field in his quest for the overall title.  Fredrickson caught the front of the field and drove around Andrew Morrissey (DeForest, WI) with six laps left to drive away with the win and capture the overall victory.

Nick Barstad (Prior Lake, MN) outran Chris Marek (Elko New Market, MN) to turn one to take the lead at the start of LaCrosse Late Model feature #3.  Marek would not make things easy for Barstad as he kept himself only a few car lengths behind Barstad for much of the race.  As both drivers continued to lead the way past the halfway mark, soon Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) joined the action in his quest for a second feature win during the weekend.  A late race yellow flag for a spin by Tom Spierowski (Neenah, WI) in turn two with three laps remaining changed the complexion of the finish.  Barstad would not be denied after losing his win in the first feature at the tech shed last night as he powered away from the field on the restart and captured a big checkered flag victory.

With Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) two points ahead of Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) entering the fourth and final LaCrosse Late Model feature, you could cut the anticipation of the end of the season with a knife.  Steve Bachman (Bangor, WI) drove past Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) for the lead position on lap two, but he would have to deal with the championship battle on his rear bumper.  Holzhausen powered underneath Bachman to become the new leader on lap six, and two laps later Goede would wrestle the runner-up spot away from Bachman.  Now the title fight was on as Holzhausen maintained about a six car length advantage over Goede.  Goede would not be able to make any sort of a dent in Holzhausen’s lead as laps counted down to the end of the year.  Holzhausen made the right adjustments to his car to capture his fourth feature win of the season and wrap up a triple play of championships.  Holzhausen locked up his second straight track championship, was crowned Chase Champion for the first time and was named the Festmater Champion for all four Oktoberfest features.

Perennial Sportsmen contender Brent Kane (Lonsdale, MN) took the lead at the start of the Area Sportsmen feature, but his night would only last five laps.  Kane was snake bitten by this race once again when smoke came out of the exhaust pipes to indicate his engine was about to call it a night.  Dave Trute (New Lisbon, WI) assumed the top spot on the restart, but he would have to deal with several challenges leading up the midway point of the race.  Contact between Chris Weber (Cashton, WI) and Jason Thoma (Jefferson, WI) sent Thoma into a long slide through the grass before hitting the back straight wall hard on lap nine.  Timmy Stewart (Gary, IN) and Jimmy O’Meara III (Randolph, MN) tangled with each other and the turn four wall on lap ten.  Tytus Helgestad (Milton, WI) tried to challenge Trute for the lead as the crossed flags were shown, but Trute stood his ground and held onto first place.  While Trute pulled away to score a $7,000 payday and win the ‘Horn Memorial Race, Helgestad had an interesting end to his race.  Driving a replica Rick Schermerhorn paint scheme, Helgestad suffered a flat tire coming out of turn two on the final lap but miraculously did not have any damage to his car and managed to drive it home to a third place finish.

The Oktoberfest Race Weekend has been a long standing place where championships are decided and new legends are made.  The moniker of ‘Championship Saturday’ will once again live up to its billing on Saturday, October 5.  Seasons come down to one final race to wrap up point titles for the Big 8 Late Model Series, the Mid-Am Racing Series and the Midwest Truck Series    The Midwest Dash Series will bring their title race into a little clearer focus with their next to last on-track battle of the year.  The ASA Midwest Tour will run their preliminary events to determine the majority of the field for their big 200 lap season finale showdown on Sunday.  Gates open at 2:10, the fight to earn a ‘Faster Than a Speeding Bullet’ award fires up at 2:25 and the ‘on the edge of your seat’ racing will warm you up beginning at 5.
