SCHMIDT SCORES A BIG FEATURE WIN FOR THE FANS AT LACROSSE

This weekend we celebrate the man that had a big influence on our lives.  The man known as Dad.  Dad was not the only person receiving gifts at the LaCrosse Speedway as the annual Fan Photo and Autograph night took place.  Hero cards, a lot of free stuff to hand out and even some giveaways awaited all race fans young and old.  The race fans were also treated to some exciting and competitive racing on the track.  Devin Schmidt would hold off the challenges of MIke Carlson down the stretch to claim the double checkered flags.

In the 25 lap NASCAR Late Model feature Jerimy Wagner (Onalaska, WI) powered by Jackson Lewis (Elko New Market, MN) for the lead.  On lap eight Devin Schmidt (Belle Plaine, MN) dove low on Wagner to take charge of the race.  A couple solo spins by Tony Bagstad (Wetby, WI) and Jonathan Eckleberg (Morrisonville, WI) on the back straight on lap nine led officials to pull over Lewis.  He would eventually be pulled off the track for fluid leaking from his rear end.  After the cleanup Schmidt slowly began to open up some distance on Wagner on the restart.  Mike Carlson (West Salem, WI) started to find some new life in his race car as he drove underneath Wagner for second with nine laps remaining.  Carlson began looking for a way around Schmidt in the late stages of the race but lapped traffic would help out Schmidt.  Schmidt opened up his advantage at the right time as he scored his second career feature win at LaCrosse after the race Schmidt said “We have been struggling to find the right setup all season and I think we may have finally figured things out.”

Bill Schott (LaCrosse, WI) took the lead halfway through the Sportsmen Feature.  Over the final five laps he would have to contend with point leader Bob Fort (Fountain City, WI) for the win.  A tiny little slip up in turn four allowed Schott to pull away from Fort to hit the finish line first.

In the Hornet feature, rookie Carter Horstman had his hands full with former champions Mark Bornitz and Kristopher Berg in a three lap shootout for the win.  Horstman did not let the pressure get to him as he claimed his first career feature checkered flag.
Mike Kreuger, Jr. took the lead six laps into the Hobby Stock feature but trying to win the race would not be easy.  Krueger, Jr. kept Charles Vian, Jr. in his rear view mirror over the final four laps to score the victory.
In the Six Shooter feature Jake Schomers needed only three laps to assume command of the race.  Schomers would not be challenged the rest of the way as he notched another feature win.

The Six Shooters competed in this week’s Novelty Event, the Backwards Race.  Here you ran your car pointed in the opposite direction for eight laps.  Matthew Miller was leading when he spun out in turn three on the final lap and that allowed John Huebner to drive away with the checkered flag.

Action continues next Saturday, June 25 with the annual Smash-O-Rama event.  The Street Stocks and  High School Racing Association will race on the quarter-mile.  There will be many fun events of destruction, plus a couple monster trucks will be smashing and destroying several cars.  The highlight of the night will be the annual Shipwreck Boat Race.  Gates open at 5:30, qualifying begins at 6, pre-race kids rides’ will follow and the smashing good time starts at 7.
