Another terrific crowd turned out on a hot summer night at the LaCrosse Speedway to witness more thrilling and competitive racing action on the big track and the ‘action track’ quarter mile. There were many exciting finishes in several of the feature events, including some late race restart drama in the NASCAR Late Model feature. Steve Bachman was the first to pick the outside lane on the restart and powered around Mike Carlson with six laps to go to score an impressive feature win.
Brent Kirchner (LaCrosse, WI) shot past Don Turner (LaCrosse, WI) from the start to assume command of the Coulee Tire 25 lap NASCAR Late Model Feature. Steve Carlson (West Salem, WI) was making his way forward quickly as he got around Turner for second on lap four. Three laps later Carlson used his patented outside lane to power around Kirchner for the race lead. Making a charge to the front as well as Mike Carlson. The feature winner from three weeks ago got around Kirchner to lock down second on lap ten. Thanks to a caution on lap 15 for Rob Christen’s (Holmen, WI) spin and tag of the inside front straight wall, Mike had a chance to challenge Steve for the race win. Mike got ahead of Steve on the restart before calamity happened, with a foru car melee coming out of turn four on lap 17. On the restart Mike and Steve Bachman (Bangor, WI) battled tooth and nail for the lead before Bachman finally surged ahead with six laps to go. Bachman pulled away to let the Carlsons fight over second as he captured his second feature win of the season. After the race Bachman said “With the car we had tonight and the opportunity to move to the outside lane on the restart, we take it!”
The second half of the Sportsmen feature was a back and forth battle between Tom Carlson (West Salem, WI) and Sam Niles (Holmen, WI). Niles tried to make a run for the lead every time but Carlson held onto the top spot all the way to the checkered flag for win number two this season.
In the Hobby Stock feature Thomas Farra battled for several laps with Jason Bolster before pulling ahead with three laps to go run his feature and division sweep streak up to four.
Lap traffic played a huge role in the finish of the Hornet feature. Andy Barney was surrounded by it and fought back a hard charging Cheyanne Stanfield to claim his second checkered flag of the season.
A three lap shootout decided the Six Shooter feature as Rob Stanfield pulled away quickly from Steven Brasda to cruise to another checkered flag win.
With five laps to go in the High School Racing Association feature Mitchell Berg dove low on Braydon Lockington. The pair banged on each other in turns three and four before Berg pulled ahead and drove away with the victory.
The Six Shooters were the featured division for the Pylon Race Novelty event. The drivers had to make a complete 360 around each pylon on the track on every lap of the six lap race. Rob Stanfield was the quickest to get around the pylons and drove away with the win.
Action continues next Saturday, July 31 with the single biggest event of the regular season at LaCrosse. There will be a ton of metal mangling mayhem race fans will witness during the annual Trailer Race of Destruction. All sorts of campers, motorhomes and specially created trailers will be smashed, crashed and trashed to the delight of the race fans. The Trailer Race will end the night of racing action with the Late Models, Sportsmen and Street Stocks. Gates open at 5:30, qualifying begins at 5:45 and racing starts at 7.
