KIRCHNER AND MOHN BEST A STELLAR FIELD AT LA CROSSE

It may have been the final night of weekly racing for the 2020 season at the La Crosse Speedway, but the racing action was just as exciting as it has been all season.  Brent Kirchner was hounded by Devin Schmidt for much of the opening feature, but Kirchner surged past Schmidt late to claim his second win of the season.  Using a ‘pick and roll’ move with two laps to go, Billy Mohn shot past Justin Mullikin to claim his maiden feature win.

Brent Kirchner Victory Lane

Jeff Partington (Farmington, MN) took the lead at the start of the first Bobcat of the Coulee Region 20 lap NASCAR Late Model feature.  Brent Kirchner (La Crosse, WI) made a daring move to drive past both Devin Schmidt (Belle Plaine, MN) and Partington and become the new leader on lap four.  After a yellow on lap eight, Schmidt would be all over Kirchner for the rest of the race.  Both drivers battled hard for several laps before Kirchner surged back into the lead just past halfway.  Despite making contact with the back straight wall, Kirchner kept it together and held onto the top spot.  Schmidt continued to be a pesky challenger to Kirchner as he took the top spot with five laps to go.  Kirchner got back ahead of Schmidt with two to go, but Schmidt was not done yet.  Schmidt tried to make one last challenge on the final lap, but Kirchner held off Schmidt to claim his second win in the last three features.  After the race, Kirchner said “I really had to work hard to get that feature, but my car really worked well no matter which lane I was in.”

Billy Mohn Victory Lane

The second Bobcat of the Coulee Region 20 lap NASCAR Late Model feature saw a side-by-side battle between Justin Mullikin (Holmen, WI) and Carter Christenson (West Salem, WI) early in the going.  Mullikin surged past Christenson for the lead four laps into the race.  Jeff Partington also drove under Christenson two laps later to settle into second.  Just past the midway point of race, Billy Mohn (Elko, MN) began to challenge the leaders.  With six laps to go, Mohn powered under Partington to take over second.  Using the lapped car of Ken Donais (Sparta, WI) as a pick, Mohn surged into the lead with two laps to go entering turn three.  Steve Carlson tried to challenge Mohn for the lead, but Mohn held off Carlson to claim his first ever feature win at La Crosse.  After the race, Mohn said “I had to make my move to the front knowing who was behind me.”

Sam Niles Victory Lane

In the Sportsmen feature, Sam Niles (Holmen, WI) quickly assumed command of the race.  Steve Blair (Brownsburg, IN), a regular on the Mid-American Stock Car Series, tried to close the gap on Niles.  Blair would end up holding off Dave Edwards (Salem, WI) for second as Niles drove off with his third win of the season.

Andy Moore assumed the race lead four laps into the Hobby Stock feature.  Tom Farra tried his best to close the gap over the final seven laps, but Moore would pull away to take the checkered flag first.

Jake Schomers Victory Lane

Jake Schomers took the lead four laps into the Hornet feature.  Jordan Young quickly closed the gap on Schomers over the final four laps, but it would be too little too late as Schomers would claim the victory.

John Huebner took the lead five laps into the Mini-Van feature.  Huebner would be challenged in the closing laps by David Treu, Jr., but Huebner fought back Treu, Jr. to score the victory.

Zach Liebsch Victory Lane

This week’s Novelty event was the Cone Race, where drivers had to balance a cone on their roof for the entire race.  In the end, Zach Liebsch did the best job of balancing his cone to take the race win.

Action continues on Saturday, September 5 with the Big Cheese Enduro, a 200 lap race for both four and six cylinder cars.  The Mini-Vans will run their final race of the year and crown their 2020 champion.  The High School Racing Association will also be in action with a regional event to wrap up their inaugural season.  Gates open at 6:00, qualifying begins at 6:30 and the first green flag flies at 7:30.
