A SMASHING NIGHT OF ACTION AT LA CROSSE

With summer weather finally arriving in the Coulee Region, fans flocked to the LaCrosse Speedway for some good clean fun. The annual Wisconsin Lottery Smash-O-Rama showcased a lot of smashing, crashing and destroying of stuff. The fans also got to see some action packed racing on the quarter-mile as well.

Tristan Drazkowski lead much of the Street Stock feature with Dustin McCracken in hot pursuit. Dan Frye made his way through the field, used lap traffic to get around the leaders and took over the lead with four to go. Jake Schomers would also use lap traffic to his advantage to catch and drive by Frye with only two laps left to claim his second win of the season.

Rob Stanfield would start the Mini-Van feature deep in the field. It would take Stanfield six laps to get to the front and claim his second victory of 2019.

Jonathan Burbach got to drive a car through a boat in the Boat Crash. On his first try, Burbach gave the boat a glancing blow. With his car still intact and running, Burbach gave it a second try. This time Burbach made direct contact with the boat and busted it into pieces.

Remember the Backwards races at the old Columbus 151 Speedway? The Street Stocks brought back some memories with their own version of the Backwards Race. Rob Schliefer drove around Jonathan Burbach in turn four on the last lap to win the race.

The monster trucks returned to wow the crowd as they smashed cars and grabbed some big air. Josh Baumgartner from Lakeville, MN brought out the Mechanical Mischief truck to dazzle the crowd in only his second time in the truck. He was joined by Mark Peterson from St. Clair, MI and his mean looking Reptoid monster truck.

Edgerton native Ryan Suchanek returned to perform stunts on his motorcycle. The holder of two world records for racing on ice thrilled the crowd with several wheelies and a few burnouts. Despite being an amputee, Suchanek even performed a daring wheelie stop on his front tire while sitting on the handle bars of his ride.

In the Rollover Contest, Davis Helgerson scored a perfect roll on his first try. He nearly scored a perfect roll on his second attempt to run away with the win.

The fans voted for veteran race Jeff Sarver to fly through the air into the pool for the Pool Spalshtacular. Sarver crashed through the back side of the pool and released tons of water. Sarver was not satisfied, so he drove through the pool on his way back to make sure he finished it off.

In the Burnout Contest, Ryan Rasmussen brought out the very first van ever to compete in the event. Rasmussen would out smoke Austin Schott to be the ‘King of the Burnout’ for the night.

Dustin McCracken was the lucky driver to participate in the Piano Smash event. McCracken got to crash through the piano to help him forget about those days of taking piano lessons from a very strict teacher.

The Shipwreck Boat Race saw a lot of boats crashed and busted into pieces. As the checkered flag flew, Matt Moore’s vehicle suddenly caught on fire. Safety crews were able to pull out Moore from his vehcle. The fire, combined with the crashing he caused, gave Moore a close win in the fan vote over Davis Helgerson.

Action continues Wednesday, July 3rd with the annual Star Spangled Spectacular. The Late Models will compete in twin 20-lap features to kickoff your 4th of July holiday. The Sportsmen, Hobby Stocks and Hornets will also be in action. Wrapping up the evening will be the Race in Total Darkness and a huge fireworks show. Gates open at 6:00, qualifying begins at 6:15 and racing action starts at 7:30.
