West Salem, WI – The excitement of the 2009 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season is finally here, and today fans were greeted to a preview of what’s to come this season. Over 60 cars participated in the annual “media day” test session at the historic 5/8th mile paved racing oval.
Among the many cars that were on the track included Kwik Trip NASCAR Late Models, North Country Contractors Sportsmen, United Auto Supply Thunderstox, Hornets, a couple Super Late Models and an ASA Late Model North Series car. Several rookie drivers have registered to compete this season, and some that were on hand were the Late Models of Brandon Grady, Cole Howland, and Kyle Peters. Unofficially, some of the fastest laps timed were those of veterans Todd Korish and Brad Powell. Howland had his car setup fast and appeared to be one of the fastest rookies.
Official Observer and wrecker driver Mike Niles was on hand in the pit area, and commented on his perspective. “The cars all look great this year, and I can’t wait for next Saturday to arrive. I’ve been waiting for opening night for months; This is definitely going to be an exciting season,” concluded Niles. Director of Competition Ray Loughan was overwhelmed with how smooth the opening practices have gone. “I don’t believe it; the weather was perfect today, and all the drivers are excited to be back on the track.”
Next Saturday night, Budweiser presents all the action and excitement on the track, including the Late Models, Sportsmen, Thunderstox and a second over the line wins novelty race. Don’t forget to get a $2 off adult admission coupon (for opening night), which will be available in the Speedway’s LaCrosse Tribune ad later this week. An additional pre-season practice is scheduled for Thursday evening, April 23rd from 5:00 until 7:30. Fans are always welcome to stop by and watch.
