DEGENHARDT AND GOEDE TAKE DIFFERENT ROADS TO VICTORY AT LACROSSE

Many of the NASCAR Late Model competitors here at the LaCrosse Speedway say that they love the challenge that is presented by the twin 20 lap features.  After completing the first feature, the drivers and crews begin to search for answers to keep their cars competitive as possible for the second feature.  The second feature may be a search for better performance for some teams, while others work on their cars in between the features to duplicate their great showing in the opening feature.  Tonight’s first round of twin 20 lap features could not have had different storylines in each race.  Adam Degenhardt put in a dominant performance to run away with the opening race, while Jacob Goede used a couple late caution periods to his advantage in scoring the victory in the nightcap.

Adam Degenhardt (Coon Valley, WI) powered by Michael Haggar (Hanover, MN) for the lead at the start of the first 20 lap Altra Federal Credit Union NASCAR Late Model feature.  Steve Bachman (Rockland, WI) got around Haggar for second place on lap four.  Bachman was trying to keep up with Degenhardt’s hot pace, but Degenhardt continued to pull away from his competition. Making his way from the middle of the pack up to fourth by the mid-race point was Jacob Goede (Carver, MN).  Goede dove to the inside of Brent Kirchner (LaCrosse, WI) to surge into the number three position on lap 13.  Goede was working on catching Bachman for second over the final seven laps, but his real objective was to try and make a dent in Degenhardt’s advantage.  In the end no one had an answer for Degenhardt as he drove away with his first victory in at least three years.  After the race Degenhardt said “We did not make a single adjustment to our race car since opening day two weeks ago.  It seems like the car plays well in the heat.”

NASCAR Late Model Altra Federal Credit Union 20 lap feature #2 saw Mike Carlson (West Salem, WI) shoot by Jerimy Wagner (Onalaska, WI) for the lead.  Carlson pulled out to a huge lead and for a while it looked like we were in for a repeat performance.  Goede drove around Wagner for second on lap 12, and then a couple late yellows played into Goede’s hands.  Tony Leis (Middle Ridge, WI) spun in turn four with four laps left after his engine expired and caught fire.  During the red flag, Wagner headed to his pits with an issue on his car that forced him to give up third and ended his race early.  The restart did not get very far when Nicholas Beaver (Webster, MN) and Don Turner (LaCrosse, WI) tangled in turn one.  Goede stuck to the outside lane on the restart as he charged by Carlson for the top spot.  Goede kept his competitors in check down the stretch to claim his first win of the season.  After the race Goede said “The competition here at LaCrosse is some of the best we have encountered in the upper Midwest.  That is why we love racing here.”

Bob Fort (Fountain City, WI) powered around Taylor Goldman (Saint Louis Park, MN) on lap seven of the NASCAR Sportsmen feature, but several challengers were hot on his heels after that.  Justin Berg (Bangor, WI) tried to get around Fort on the final lap but the two drivers made contact in turn two.  Both went to the tail and Jamie Dummer (Tomah, WI) drove away from Andy Barney (West Salem, WI) in a quick one lap showdown to capture a surprise victory.

The NASCAR Hornet feature saw former competitor Patrick Thicke return to action behind the wheel of Keanna Barney’s ride.  Thicke build up enough of a lead that not even defending champion Lester Stanfield could stop Thicke from returning to Altra Federal Credit Union Victory Lane for the first time in a few years.

A late race yellow flag with two laps to go in the Six Shooter feature gave Rob Stanfield a chance to go for another victory.  Stanfield wasted little time on the restart to power around race long leader Matthew MIller to score to win.

The first feature of the year for the High School Racing Association saw a great battle between former LaCrosse champions Mitchell Berg and Braydon Lockington.  Berg was able to keep Lockington in his rear view mirror for much of the race to claim the first checkered flag of the new season.
The 2nd Over the Line Wins novelty event is always a chess match among the competitors as they wait for someone to flinch, which give them the opening to go for the win.  Alex Liebsch picked the right moment to make his move when someone else jumped a little early to claim victory in this always challenging race.

Action continues next Saturday, June 10 as the NASCAR Late Models, NASCAR Sportsmen, NASCAR Hornets, Street Stocks and Mini-Vans will be in action on the track.  Before they compete, all of these drivers will have hero cards and goodies to give out during the annual Fan Photo and Autograph Night.  Starting at 5:45 all the race cars will line up on the front straight for LaCrosse’s annual  ‘meet and greet’ for the race fans.  Gates open at 5:30, Fan Photo and Autograph Night starts at 5:45 and the drivers will race for you fans beginning at 7.
