Race fans from far and wide have converged on the LaCrosse Speedway for one last big racing get together, the 55th annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend.  Not only have there been many great memories made in the Camper Village or in the grandstands, we have witnessed many thrilling and nail biting racing memories over the years.  On the opening day of Oktoberfest we saw the newest chapter written about the phenomenal rookie driver following in his famous father’s tire tracks.  Ty Fredrickson’s impressive rookie year in a Super Late Model continued as he added his first ever Oktoberfest victory to his ever growing resume with a victory in the Super Late Model ‘Futures’ race.

Kody King (Clear Lake, IA) zoomed past Jerry Mueller (Richfield, WI) to lead the early going of the Super Late Model ‘Futures’ feature.  While King was building up a sizable lead on the field, King would have to contend with arguably the hottest rookie driver in the Midwest down the stretch.  Coming from his 12th starting spot, Ty Fredrickson (Northfield, MN) was picking off drivers faster than the autumn leaves change colors.  Fredrickson would eventually catch up to King and swoosh by him on the inside with ten laps to go for the lead.  Fresh off his victory at Marshfield just five days earlier, Fredrickson would check out on his competition as he claimed his first Oktoberfest feature victory.

In the Super Late Model ‘Knights’ feature, Levon Van der Geest (Merrill, WI) powered by Corey Jankowski (Tomah, WI) for the top spot and led the first third of the race.  After Jankowski tagged the outside wall in turn three on lap 10, Derek Kraus (Stratford, WI) shot around Van der Geest to move into the lead position on the restart.  With a ‘Futures’ win  under his belt, Kraus was ready to add a ‘Knights’ victory to his racing endeavors but the night’s fast qualifier would have something to say about that.  After starting in mid-pack, Dalton Zehr (Verona, WI) drove around Kraus to settle into first place with six laps left.  Despite a late caution for a spinning Justin Mondeik (Gleason, WI) with only three laps to go, Zehr quickly pulled away from the field on the final restart to hit the finish line first. 

Nick Clements (West Salem, WI) drove by Tom Luethe (West Salem, WI) to early the opening laps of the first LaCrosse Late Model feature.  After an early yellow flag on lap two for a spinning Andy Barney (West Salem, WI) in turn three, Luethe began to come back at Clements and put all sorts of pressure on him for the lead.  Leuthe got an opening underneath Clements at halfway and would power by him on lap 11 to take over the lead.  Making a big run through the front runners during the second half of the race was Adam Bendzick (New Prague, MN) as he shot past Luethe for the lead with four laps remaining.  Luethe got loose entering turn one with three laps left and spun out in turn one, but that late yellow did not stop Bendzick from pulling away from the field to capture the checkered flag. 

LaCrosse Late Model feature #2 saw Michael Beamish (Eagan, MN) surge past Jason Stark (Wisconsin Dells, WI) to settle into the lead.  Steve Carlson (West Salem, WI) was doing everything he could to close the gap on Beamish, but both drivers would have to deal with the reigning track champion soon enough.  Skylar Holzhausen (Bangor, WI) was making quick work of the field in his efforts to go after a second straight track title.  Holzhausen shot past Carlson for second on lap five, then quickly caught Beamish to move into the lead on lap seven.   A classic LaCrosse rivalry was on again at Holzhausen maintained about a five or six car length lead on Carlson.  That is how the race would finish with win number three of the year going to Holzhausen.  Thanks to that win Holzhausen and Jacob Goede (Carver, MN) are now deadlocked for the championship going into the final pair of 20 lap features on Friday night.   

Joey Pontbriand (Norway, MI) was looking to end his year with an Oktoberfest title to go along with his Norway track championship as he led the first half of the LaCrosse Sportsmen feature.  Veteran racer Bill Schott (LaCrosse, WI) surged past Pontbriand just past the halfway mark to take the lead and pulled away to a comfortable victory.  The third time was for Justin Berg (Bangor, WI) as he finally locked up the Chase Championship.  By just showing up to race, Bob Fort (Fountain City, WI) put the wraps on the season points title.  

Jacob Iverson was looking to add an Oktoberfest feature win to his resume in the LaCrosse Hornet feature after missing out on the championship last season.  Carter Horstman powered around Iverson with three laps remaining to drive away with the feature victory and locked up the Chase Championship as well.  A steady effort by Jimmy Bjorkman gave him an 11th place effort to secure his second division title in four years.

The LaCrosse Street Stock feature was a sibling battle between Andy Moore and Matt Moore.  Multi-time Hobby Stock champion Andy was able to open up a sizable lead over Matt to pull away with a long overdue Oktoberfest feature win.  Thanks to a flat track just past halfway in the race for John Huebner, Steven Brasda ran a cautious race to finish 13th and locked up his first ever track championship after years of being a successful championship crew chief for John ‘Madman’ Eron.

The night would be capped off with the annual World Famous Double-O Race, which utilizes both the main track and the inner quarter-mile in a very unique figure 8 race.  Ashton Kinsey and his Six Shooter lead the first four laps before the high powered race cars of Mike Krueger, Jr. and Bill Schott got into their own battle within a battle for the win.  Krueger, Jr. kept about a three car length lead on the modified race car of Schott and would drive away with an Oktoberfest feature win.

That completes the opening act of the 55th edition of the Oktoberfest Race Weekend.  The second segment takes place on Friday, October 4 with even more thrilling and nail biting action.  Drivers from throughout the Midwest and even the country will converge on the LaCrosse Speedway to battle for the prestigious Dick Trickle 99 trophy and join the list of prominent winners of the one race that has Dick Trickle’s own stamp of approval on it.  Sportsmen competitors from across the Midwest will do battle with the LaCrosse Sportsmen regulars to see who is the best Area Sportsmen driver  The LaCrosse NASCAR Late Models will complete their grueling five program marathon and run their final pair of 20 lap features with track, Chase and Festmaster championships hanging in the balance.  Gates open at 2:45, the battle for quick qualifying supremacy begins at 3 and the high octane fender rubbing racing action revs to life at 5:30.
