TOP GUNS OF THE ‘ACTION TRACK’ HEADLINE QUARTER-MILE MANIA AT LACROSSE

The big track at the LaCrosse Speedway always get the big fan fare with events like the Oktoberfest Race Weekend, Late Model double feature nights and the upcoming CWRA Tribute to Larry Wehrs show.  Every now and again the ‘action track’ quarter-mile has its time in the bright spotlight with events like the recent Smash-O-Rama, the upcoming Night of Destruction and tonight’s Quarter-Mile Mania event.  A number of the quarter-mile divisions got the chance to feel like they were experiencing their version of Daytona.  Jake Schomers, Charles Vian, Jr. and Alex Liebsch are always big time threats to win every time they race on the quarter-mile, and tonight they would drive away with some impressive victories.
Steven Brasda (York, WI) got around Nathan Myhre (Westby, WI) for the lead at the start of the Street Stock feature.  A couple of caution periods slowed the action down and allowed Keith Larson (LaCrosse, WI) to join the fray.  Larson powered around the outside of Brasda at the halfway mark to take charge of the race.  A few laps later Jake Schomers (LaCrescent, MN) caught the back end of Larson’s machine. With four laps to go in the race Schomers shot past Larson on the outside to move into the top spot and drive away with the victory.

In the Hobby Stock feature, Charles Vian, Jr. got around Jason Bolster for the lead on lap five.  Mike Krueger, Jr. tried to close the gap in the late going but there was no stopping Vian, Jr. from capturing his first checkered flag win on the season and completing a clean sweep of the division.
Fast qualifier Alex Liebsch carefully maneuvered his way through the Six Shooter feature field before challenging Cody Bell for the lead.  Liebsch took to the outer groove to drive around Bell with three laps remaining to hit the finish line first.

The Mini-Van Feature saw its largest field in some time as 11 competitors battled for 15 laps.  Jay Raines only needed a few laps to get to the front, would not be challenged by John Huebner down the stretch and drove off with his first feature win in a number of years.
After holding off both LaCrosse HSRA champions Ashton Kinsey and Braydon Lockington in his heat race, it was deja vu all over again for Landin Frye come feature time.  His mirrors were full of both Kinsey and Lockington but Frye did a masterful job of staying ahead of both to capture his first ever HSRA feature victory.

The Spectacular Spectator Drags was a round robin competition that started with seven brave competitors and got whittled down to the final two challengers.  Lester Stanfield’s SUV got the better of Brandon McCarthy in the best two out of three final to capture the win.

The night of excitement on the ‘action track’ concluded with the $500 to win Demolition Derby.  A host of challengers feel by the wayside until three were left standing, and it was up to the race fans in attendance to decide the winner.  Despite his car catching fire late in the event, Blake Von Ruden got the loudest roars of approval from the race fans to pick up the win and the bountiful payday that went with it.

Action continues next Saturday, July 16 with the Late Models, Sportsmen, Hornets, Hobby Stocks and Six Shooters.  Gates open at 5:30, qualifying begins at 5:45 and racing starts at 7.
