PORTAGE, Wis. (June 28, 2016) – LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway is no stranger to star-studded Super Late Model fields. Friday’s TUNDRA Super Late Model Series Round Three Powered by Wisconsin Potatoes will be no exception.
The field features three past TUNDRA Champions, two former winners of the event, and plenty of contenders.
Headlining the list will be three former TUNDRA Champions – two of which are coming off strong runs in Round Two at Dells Raceway Park. Dennis Prunty patiently worked through the field and captured his third career TUNDRA win at Dells back on June 4. Two-time and reigning Champ Dalton Zehr salvaged what could have been a disastrous day with a Third Place finish at DRP, keeping his hopes alive. In the three events at LaCrosse, Zehr’s best finish was Fifth in 2014. Prunty, who did not compete in 2015, finished behind him in Sixth.
The third former Champ is 2013 Titlist Nick Panitzke. Panitzke did not compete in a TUNDRA event last season, and returns for the first time since August of 2014. Although Panitzke struggled with an ill machine in 2014, he proved strength with a Third Place finish at LaCrosse in 2013.
TUNDRA’s former Champs certainly will have their hands full with former winners. Last year’s race winner Skylar Holzhausen will return to defend the race win at his home facility. Winner of the 2014 event Reagan May will also make the trip back to LaCrosse. May led a portion of the race last year, as well.
Those former race winners and Champions may just be a notation in the history book if several contenders get what they want on Friday. Point leader Casey Johnson has finished Second in both events so far this season. Although he was Seventh in last year’s race at LaCrosse, Johnson came back with a podium finish in the Trickle 99 during Oktoberfest. With some more experience in the Chase Motorsports machine at the facility, Johnson could contend for the win and potentially stretch his point lead.
One who is certainly favored to contend for the win is Round One winner Ty Majeski. Although running a limited TUNDRA schedule in 2016, Majeski will return to what has become his home track hungry for a win. Majeski has been in contention for a trip to Victory Lane each of the past two seasons, and would like to get the monkey off his back in the mid-summer event at the 5/8-mile.
Beyond those who have enjoyed past success in TUNDRA and at LaCrosse, there remains a host of drivers who could find themselves taking home the 6′ trophy from Johnnie’s Hobbies. Young Michael Sauter picked up a Third Place finish in the race last season during his TUNDRA debut. Billy Mohn returns to TUNDRA and has set fast time for the Oktoberfest Futures race. Derek Lemke has had strong runs at LaCrosse in the past. Joel Thiesen finished Fifth in the event last season.
Aside from those spoilers there is a strong chance the trophy could be heading home with a TUNDRA Traveler. Travis Dassow has enjoyed two strong Top Five finishes in the two events this season. Terry Schoppenhorst has had a swift start to 2016 and hopes to keep the momentum going. Brandon Selle is a past quick qualifier in the event.
With an incredible field, what has become a banner event for the TUNDRA Super Late Model Series should prove to be no different this Friday.
TUNDRA Round Three Powered by Wisconsin Potatoes takes place this Friday, July 1 at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem. The main event for the Super Late Models will be the Johnnie’s Hobbies 50. The Super Late Models will be joined by the Sportsman, Vintage, Midwest Truck Series. Qualifying begins at 6:05 P.M. with racing scheduled to begin at 7:30.
